Neighborhood Video Guide

Just 30 minutes from Scottsdale and Phoenix, the pace of life slows right down and the true spirit of the western lifestyle is still alive.

Carefree and Cave Creek sit side by side in the foothills of the high Sonoran Desert, framed by Black Mountain and the Tonto National Forest. They are two neighboring towns with very different personalities, and in this film I show you how together they deliver the quintessential Arizona way of life.

The homes

Space, privacy and big desert views

Homes here are designed to take full advantage of the setting: hillside estates with walls of glass and infinity pools, golf-course homes among the granite boulders, and horse properties on acreage near the trailheads. Lots are generally larger than in Scottsdale, and the night skies are darker.

As of the latest reports, the median sale price was about $1.3 million in Carefree (spring 2026) and about $850,000 in Cave Creek (July 2026). Luxury estates in both towns range well into the millions, and homes typically take longer to sell than in central Scottsdale, so buyers often have room to negotiate.

Two towns

Carefree and Cave Creek

They share miles of mountain and desert trails, but each has its own character. Carefree is quiet, polished and built around golf and the arts. Cave Creek still feels like a frontier town, with saloons, western shops and horses on the trails.

Carefree

Golf, galleries and the giant sundial

Carefree was conceived in the 1950s by K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington as an upscale master-planned community, and it became a town in 1984. Its streets still carry playful names like Easy Street and Ho Hum Road.

The town center is a relaxed, sophisticated place to shop in surroundings that celebrate the arts, with galleries, exhibitions and stores devoted to the beauty and history of the West. At its heart stands the Carefree Sundial, built in 1959 and 90 feet across, beside the Carefree Desert Gardens.

Made for endless sunshine

Golf dominates life here, with world-class courses alongside resorts and spas. Boulders Resort & Spa covers about 1,300 acres of granite boulders and desert, with two 18-hole courses and a 33,000-square-foot spa.

Cave Creek

Saloons, stores and frontier history

Cave Creek began in the 1870s as a mining and ranching settlement and a stop for the U.S. Cavalry, and it became a town in 1986. Head over for lunch at one of its well-known restaurants and you will see how proudly it holds on to its western roots.

Cave Creek Road is lined with fascinating western stores, galleries and saloons, and the Cave Creek Museum tells the story of the area's Native American and pioneer heritage.

The outdoors

Trails, horses and the living desert

Miles of mountain and desert trails make an invigorating start to any day. Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area protects 2,154 acres along Cave Creek, with Hohokam petroglyphs, old mine sites and a seasonal creek, and Cave Creek Regional Park adds nearly 3,000 more.

No visit to Cave Creek is complete without a horseback ride. Several stables offer western trail rides out into the desert.
